PlaySing Mama
PlaySing Mama is a community music initiative founded by musician and educator Aya Zhang in 2020 during the pandemic. After a long and personal struggle with postpartum depression, Aya discovered that music could be a powerful source of healing. It became not only a tool for personal recovery but also a way to support, connect, and uplift other mothers.
The project began as an online space focused on musical games and parent-child interaction. In 2023, while on a fieldwork trip back to China, Aya used her spare time to connect with local mother communities and offered free in-person music sessions. These grassroots workshops were warmly welcomed and sparked new energy for the project.
With 15 years of experience in music education and songwriting, Aya sees music as a path for women to reclaim their voices, express their emotions, and reconnect with themselves. PlaySing Mama is built around three core values: self-care, artistic expression, and female connection. It offers a range of creative activities, including themed gatherings, music and movement classes, singing circles, and therapeutic music workshops.
Following its positive impact in China, Aya plans to expand PlaySing Mama to serve mothers in the United States beginning in 2026. Her vision includes localized and cross-cultural programs such as community singing events, mutual support groups, family music sessions, and the formation of a Moms’ Choir. She believes that every mother deserves to be heard and that music is the bridge where voices can meet, heal, and grow together.
